Two security officers were slightly injured as they tackled the man, but no one else was hurt.

The attack came in the early hours of US Independence Day and shortly before dawn prayers marking the start of the daily Ramadan fast.

Militants attacked the Jeddah consulate in 2004, leaving nine people dead.

The US State Department said it was aware of Monday’s blast, adding that it “can confirm that all personnel under chief of mission authority are accounted for at this time”.

Security guards became suspicious of a man in the car park of the Dr Suleiman Faqeeh hospital around 02:15 (23:15 GMT Sunday), interior ministry spokesman Maj-Gen Mansour al-Turki said in a statement.

The hospital is opposite the US consulate.

As the guards approached the man, “he blew himself up with a suicide belt inside the hospital parking,” the statement said.

The US embassy in Saudi Arabia issued a warning after the attack, urging Americans to “remain aware of their surroundings, and take extra precautions when travelling throughout the country”.

The bloody attack comes as Moran Mor Ignatius Aphrem II, the patriarch of the Syriac Orthodox Church, was holding a special ceremony commemorating the 101 anniversary of Ottoman genocide against Armenians and Assyrians of Qamishli.

Local sources said that government troops securing the event had stopped the suspected bomber and prevented him from entering the ceremony before he detonated his explosive belt, killing all three guards and wounding dozens.

The northeastern city of Qamishli, populated mostly by Christians, was targeted by ISIS suicide attacks at least three times before, where dozens of civilians have been killed and wounded.

Boko Haram has staged several attacks in Kano

Khadija Ibrahim, 30, told reporters she had been waiting for a bus to hospital in the north-eastern city of Maiduguri when she was seized by two men in a car who had offered her a lift.

While drugged, the mother of three was stripped and a suicide belt attached, she is quoted as saying.

She managed to flee her abductors.

Ms Ibrahim said after getting into the car, she fell unconscious when something was placed over her nose.

But she woke up, apparently without her captors realising, to hear one of them whispering to her that she was “going to do God’s work”.

The kidnappers told her she was being taken to the city of Kano to attack the Kantin Kwari textile market.

But when the car engine overheated, both kidnappers were distracted – one was examining the engine while the other went to look for water.

Ms Ibrahim then managed to flee and a man in the Hotoro neighbourhood of Kano took her to the police.

She was also brought before the Kano state governor, Umar Ganduje, who told the media: “If this woman had not regained consciousness the story would have been different by now.”

The woman is now in “safe custody….undergoing post-traumatic rehabilitation,” Kano police spokesman Magaji Musa Majiya told the BBC’s Hausa service.

Police are trying to track down the vehicle in an attempt to find a second kidnapped girl, thought to be about 15 years old, he added.

The other woman in the car with her may also have been drugged, Ms Ibrahim suggested.

Boko Haram has staged numerous attacks using young women in the past year.

Taliban promises more “devastating” attacks on Christians

By Antony Bushfield

The Taliban has said it will commit more “devastating” attacks on Christians as it revealed details of the suicide bomber who killed at least 73 people at an Easter celebration in Pakistan.

A spokesman for the Jamaat-ul-Ahrar, an offshoot of the Pakistani Taliban, has given an interview to America’s NBC News.

In it he identifies Salahuddin Khorasani as the man who blew himself up at a Christian festival in a Lahore Park on March 27.

He said the attack was targeted at Christians, although most of the dead were Muslim. More than 320 others were injured.

The militant promised more attacks on Pakistan’s Christian community which is already under pressure from a growing Islamist agenda.

Jihadis were training in Afghanistan with the mission of crossing the border to target Christians, he said.

Pakistan has been increasing operations against terrorists across the country since the Easter attack.
