Report claims more than 900,000 Christians were martyred in 10 years between 2005 – 2015.
In line with a recent report, more than 900,000 Christians have perished in 10 years. This report was published by a Christian research agency associated with Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary in the United States.
The research recently released by Gordon-Conwell’s Center for the Study of Global Christianity covering the issue of persecution of Christians. The report revealed that over 90,000 Christians had lost their lives on religious grounds in the ten years between 2005 and 2015.
“The Center for the Study of Global Christianity has done extensive research on Christian martyrdom, both historical and contemporary. We estimate that between 2005 and 2015 there were 900,000 Christian martyrs worldwide — an average of 90,000 per year,” stated Gordon-Conwell Center.
Gordon-Conwell’s Center for the Study of Global Christianity explained the criteria used for the research stating that the characterization of word “martyr” are two factors. Firstly, the slain Christians must have been through a “situation of witness” of the gospel and secondly they have been killed “as a result of hostility,’ towards Christianity.
The Centre further explained that “‘Witness’ in this definition is not restricted to public testimony concerning belief in Jesus.” The email further “refers to the individual’s entire lifestyle, regardless of whether or not he or she was actively proclaiming at the time of death.”
The Center for the Study of Global Christianity also uncovered the fact that Christians are the most persecuted religious group throughout the world.
